Dear Friend of Kyabgon Kunzang Dechen Lingpa,

We have just heard from the monastery in India that Rinpoche passed
away.

http://www.zangdokpalri.org/teacher.html

As you can imagine the monks and nuns are very upset. Rinpoche was
nearly 80 years old and for the last 6 years suffered from an
extreme heart condition and was often on the brink of death. The
doctors who treated him in the USA initially couldn't understand how
he had survived. Through your generosity in the past we were able to
get him a state of the art electronic heart pacemaker and that saved
his life a few times.

Those of us lucky enough to have gotten close to Rinpoche heard him
relate again and again that he was at the end of his life and only
wished to spend his final time in secluded meditation benefiting
beings. He explained that that was the only method by which a
meditation master such as he could attain the rainbow body, his life
long dream. He spoke directly of abandoning that dream of a peaceful
end in order to instead struggle, traveling the world to teach and
heal and collect donations so that he could fulfill the vision of
the completion of Zangdokpalri Temple and medical clinic on a
Himalayan hilltop in Arunachal Pradesh, the poorest and least
populated state in India.

Clearly Rinpoche was suffering greatly in order to build this Temple
to establish the foundations for the sangha of nearly 200 monks and
nuns that spontaneously gathered around him as well as provide
medical care to the local people. This temple is now only half
complete. Nearly a hundred workers and artisans are working full
time whenever there are funds available to pay them. The monastery
council has prepared detailed accounts earlier this year that
indicate a bare minimum of $250,000 is needed to finish just the
temple. With these funds completion could comethis year, and with
this aim in mind Rinpoche had recently scheduled to travel once
again to England and the USA to obtain donations.

Now that plan is just a thought. But we have an opportunity to not
let Rinpoche's vision die with him. We can donate what we can and
encourage others' participation so that Rinpoche's vision comes to
fruition. We can join with him in deathlessness.

When I got the news I was in a taxi heading over to a video and audio
studio. Tapes of Rinpoche's last dzokchen teaching, "Pointing Out The

Nature of Mind", have just been discovered by a professional
cinematographer and we are working to make copies of this precious
teaching available for his students. Those of us who donate 108
dollars can receive a gift of an audio cd of this teaching.Donations
in excess of 250 dollars can receive a video DVD of the teaching.
These teachings are clearly translated. Those of us who were lucky
enough to be present were awestruck with the directness and
compassion of the transmission.

With obvious sadness but with joy knowing that we will join together
with Rinpoche and see his vision fulfilled. Thank you,

Moke Mokotoff for Zangdokpalri Foundation for Great Compassion

Dear Beloved Sangha, Community of Friends,

[Although many of you have already heard this sad news via Zangdokpalri Foundation and "word of mouth", it has been brought to our attention through confused e-mails and calls wondering what has really happened, that many of our beloved friends & community had not yet recieved this holy, precious, and very sad news. Therefore we decided to send this out. Thankyou for your patience.]

On Tuesday, March 28th, at 12:30 pm, upon the cusp of the solar eclipse, Kyabgon Kunsang Dechen Lingpa passed away peacefully in India.

"He remained in TUKDOM (with no vital signs but a warm heart and a
state of deep meditational awareness) for two and one half days. His
body remains in meditational posture and the plan is to preserve him
as a KUDHONG, in a stupa." (From Zangdokpalri Organization)

It has been suggested in general, recite Mani mantras, offer candles, and pray for Rinpoche's swift return.
I also spoke with Traga Rinpoche, a wonderful Dzogchen yogi and the retreat master at Garchen Rinpoche's AZ center, who said that he had met Kyabgon Kunsang Dechen Lingpa previously in India and spoke highly of Rinpoche. He gave us some specific instructions for what is to be done by the students and disciples when such a high Lama and Great Being passes away.

"As a group:
1. Say Vajrasattva, Chenrezig, and Amitabha mantras.
2. Light as many butter lamps as possible and say general prayers. 3. Make prayers together that his reincarnation is identified as soon as

possible.
4. Confess all degenerated samayas together as a ceremony. Having
confessed everything, pray that your own being will be filled with the
blessing of the lama."

Although Rinpoche mentioned this "as a group", I am sure this can be done individually as well.

In LINCOLN, VT we WILL MEET TO PRACTICE TOGETHER in honor of KYABGON KUNSANG DECHEN LINGPA on SUNDAY, APRIL 2nd from 5:30-7:30 pm. We will do all the prayers together as above mentioned. We will start precisely at 5:30, but all are welcome at 5pm and thereafter to settle in. Please bring a snack to share as the last portion of our time together will be just community time and sharing together our celebration of the great blessing Kunsang Dechen Lingpa has been in our lives.

Location: 210 ROBINSON RD. (802-453-3431/taradrolkar@gmavt.net for directions or information)

As soon as we are sent any prayer written specifically for the swift rebirth of Kunsang Dechen Lingpa, we will pass this on.

Also, the monks and nuns and entire monastic mandala there in India are having a difficult time. Please please make prayers for them. They have lost their mother/father/sustenance giver/friend, as well as Guru. There is still so much work to be done on their new monastery. And they are grieving tremendously. So please make prayers.

Much love, and may we all be filled with the blessings of the great beings who have never been limited by their bodies anyway, and may the blessing of Kunsang Dechen Lingpa, his bodhicitta heart and clear light wisdom mind, pervade this earth and all realms, the activity of that spontaneously liberating all beings.

much love- Elizabeth/ DDCV.

Dear friends,

I am writing from Rinpoche's nunnery, Tashi Choling in Assam.

The senior monks have explained to me that about a month before he
passed Rinpoche spoke to the monks close to him that there would be
specifically 5 incarnations. On occasions when traveling in the past
he had indicated that his incarnations would be reborn even in
different countries. Rinpoche had often expressed his wish to pass
in the presense of his monks and nuns at the Zangdolpalri Temple
site.

All indications are that he passed at will, having finished the
annual drupchens at both the nunnery and the monastery and having
given the Longevity Buddha Initiation (Tse Wang ) to nearly 10,000
people. Afterwards he was not feeling well but refused to go to the
hospital. Dungse and Ani Tsering Paldron determined that his
condition seemed dire and took him anyway to the local military
hospital, his last words to his senior administrator monk Tsewang
Dondup before leaving the temple project grounds were "You go on
filling the statues with mantras and I will be back". His vital
signs ceased about an hour after arriving at the hospital. They
returned him to his room at the gompa (monastery) where Rinpoche
remained in a state of deep meditational awareness sitting upright
unassisted for 2 and half days (Tib: TUKDOM) When I asked the monks
how they knew he had left tukdom they explained that Dungse (his
son) wrote him a letter requesting him to leave tukdom as there were
many students and sponsors waiting to pay respects to his body and
that he knew it was not good to stay in that state of deep
meditation too long. Dungse placed the letter before him and a
storm rolled in during this particularly dry period. A bolt of
lightening struck the pray flag pole in the center of the court yard
and a down pour began, then a rainbow appeared just above his room.
(see photos, which will be posted in the next few days at
www.zangdokpalri.org "The passing of Kunzang Dechen Lingpa 2006").
His body had then lost its luster. Now the body is packed in dry
salt and puja is to be constantly performed for 49 days. The salt
is changed every 5 or 6 days and distributed to the faithful. A
special stupa is being constructed which will contain the body in
perpetuity. Rinpoche instructed the monks in this process during
the last few months.

Not only is Rinpoche's goal to construct the Zangdokpalri Temple
still not completed, as well there are additional expenses to
construct Rinpoche's stupa. Should any want to contribute tax
deductable donations, send your check payable to
Zangdokpalri Foundation for Great Compassion

New York NY 10011
Or donate online at "how to help" through that link at
www.zangdokpalri.org

There is the possibility that this year's scheduled Healing Cho
tour will go on conducted by Rinpoche's son and the monks and nuns.

April 16, 2006

Dear Friends,
I am writing from the Zangdokpalri Temple in Arunachal Pradesh.
The temple is nearly complete except for the painting and statues.
These final details including windows and mosaic floors will probably
take another 2 years. The best statue maker from Bhutan (in the
world by my estimation) is here and some of the statues have been
finished but are still unpainted and unconsecrated. The temple has an
amazing consolidated form with the double dragons on the roof. More
and more information is coming up indicating that Rinpoche knew he
was going to pass at this time. He wrote a five page aspiration
prayer when he was in California last fall and it is indicated quite
clearly that he would have five tulkus and the circumstances of his
passing including the rainbow above the kudhong and the thunder and
lightening. That aspiration is being translated and is recited here
at the monastery daily. Today I was shown the workshops he designated
for specific prayers to be inserted into specific statues. That was
the day before he passed. Apparently he was acting in such an
energetic manner going around giving the monks and nuns what turned
out to be his last directions that they particularly thought he was
in the best shape. When he got sick the symptoms were a shortness of
breath but no coughing. It had been three days since he gave the Long
Life initiation to thousands and he had rested and picnicked the day
before. At the hospital the doctors found nothing wrong with him in
their diagnosis. Dungse Rinpoche and a small group of senior monks
(usually including Pema Wangdu and /or Pema Tsedrup) perform puja all
day and into the night before the kudhong . In the gompa pujas
performed by nearly 100 monks and nuns are going on simultaneously
led by Rinpoche's disciple the savant Jangdak Rinpoche ("Holder of
the Jang Ter"). The idea is to perform 100,000 tsok prayers in the 49
days along with multiple prayers for Kunzang Dechen Lingpa's swift
rebirth (see www.zangdokparlri.org in a day or two and click below
the rainbow photo for translations of these prayers). Jangdak
Rinpoche is quite convinced of Rinpoche's swift return, he
accompanied him to the hospital and it's he who explained to me the
interpretation of the aspiration prayer Rinpoche wrote in
California. Jangdak Rinpoche is expected to determine Kunzang
Dechen Lingpa's reincarnation by mirror divination, a skill he is
renowned for. He just now came out of the assembly and alerted me
that a vast rainbow had formed around the sun (see website later for
image)

KDL's son Dungse Rinpoche Rigdzin Dorje looks great, of course he
is deeply saddened but he is hearty dharmically and has just agreed
that he and 5 monks and nuns will tour America starting with Healing
Cho at Kripalu June 30. He is quite prepared to teach on the tour.
Rinpoche had called them all together after completing the Kurukulle
drupchen in February and explained to them that the whole dharma is
complete within the cycle of his tercho and that not only should they
practice it but also propagate it.

The Chorten containing the kudhong with all its extensive
preparations and gilding will cost $100,000. That is in addition to
the quarter million dollars they need to finish the temple. The
Chorten needs to be completed in about 6 months. If anyone wants to
make donations for its completion you can send those tax deductible
donations to Zangdokpalri Foundation NY with such a notation. The
monastic council has requested photos of donors to be included in an
eventual presentation album, so include such a photo if you wish.

Yours on the path,
Moke

Dear Friend,

Rinpoche has continued to exhibit signs of his enlightened
transference and the efficacy of his revealed teachings. The
monastery reported a steady rainbow ring occurring in the dark night
sky when the salt was changed the other night. The pujas for the 49
day period since Rinpoche passed will end today. Auspiciously
Kyabje Dungse Thrinley Norbu Rinpoche's prayer for the swift
rebirth of Kyabje Kunzang Dechen Lingpa arrived today and is posted
at http://www.zangdokpalri.org/rebirth1.html. This succinct prayer
articulates the essence of the Buddhist teachings while directly
evoking our teacher's compassionate aspirations.
