Brief Bio: Tulku Theglo Rinpoche, also known as Padma Theg Chog Tanpa'i Gyaltsan was recognized by Jamyang Khentse Chokyi Lodru as the incarnation of his second son, Padma Dorje. Tulku Theglo was enthroned when he was five years old and at age ten entered Dodrubchen Monastery in Golog and began his formal studies. He studied under four great Khenpos such as Khenpo Gangnam, Thrindar, Wangdei Gyangtrul Dondrub Dorje and Washul Khenpo Lodru. Dagmola (Jamyang) Sakya was perhaps the first Tibetan woman ever to immigrate to America. Her full title reads Her Eminence Dag-Yum Kusho Sakya, which denotes her high-ranking status as the wife of one of the most eminent masters in the Sakya tradition, His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen Sakya Rinpoche. She is one of the very few senior Tibetan ladies who were born in pre-Communist Tibet, but are now recognized as outstanding teachers and live in America. A combination of the most unlikely circumstances enabled Dagmola to become one of the first Tibetan women to teach in the West. Born 1936 in a tiny village in East Tibet, she was the only girl allowed to go to school. Instead of complying with the established system of arranged marriages, Dagchen Rinpoche fought for her hand. After escaping from Tibet with her family, she made a new home in Seattle with her five boys, while holding down a nine-to-five job at a blood bank. She also quietly devoted herself inwardly to spiritual practice under the guidance of her revered uncle, H.E. Dezhung Rinpoche. H.E. Dezhung Rinpoche encouraged her to begin teaching Buddhism and granting empowerments. Thus, Dagmola is authorized to accept the role of Lama by one of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist masters of the Sakya Order and by other esteemed Tibetan Lamas. Dagmola regularly bestows empowerments and teaches at Sakya Monastery in Seattle, WA. She has founded the Mother Tara Center/Tara Ling in San Gabriel, California and established centers in Kona, Hawaii; Flagstaff, Arizona; and Mexico City.
Her story is written in her book, Princess in the Land of Snows. Her experience as a working mother of five resonates with many students. When students ask her for advice on how to combine a spiritual path with the stress of modern life, she does not need to put herself in their shoes - she knows the challenges only too well. "Practice is in every day life, not just sitting on the cushion," Dagmola says. "Every move, every breath, every thought is practice.” Dagmola will use her life experience to talk about meditation in general and specifically: • How to maintain a meditation practices with such a busy life • Benefits from her practices in daily life • Meditation in daily life • Guidance in some meditation techniques

As many of you know, Venerable Khenpo Rinpoche visited Portland and SCOL just last June. In February, we invited him to join and preside over the ceremonies ending the Three-Year Retreat. At first, Rinpoche responded that he would be engaged in a retreat and could not come.
Very recently, Lama Eric Triebelhorn told us that Rinpoche had changed his mind. The completion of this first Three-Year Retreat at SCOL, using English translations, conducted and attended by Westerners, is so important to the vitality of the Dharma that he would find a way to be here with us at the Opening Ceremony.
Let us take a moment to appreciate the significance of this. Khenpo Rinpoche, truly a jewel of the Dharma and our lineage, feels that this event is so important that he must cancel other commitments in order to come 5,000 miles to be here with us. For me, it will be as if Bokar Rinpoche himself had somehow managed to come to see the first ripened fruit on the tree of his aspiration to create SCOL.
Khenpo Rinpoche’s presence will speak volumes of the value he places on this endeavor. His words will increase our understanding of the purpose and the benefits of such long retreats, not only for the individual participants but for their families, the Sangha and the community beyond.
Many people at the Opening will not have encountered a Three-Year Retreat before. They will come with open hearts and open minds. If teachings are given, they will be ready to listen. Over time, by seeing the ceremony and hearing Rinpoche's words, some individuals may be moved to consider undertaking a Three-Year Retreat themselves. Others may wish to give their support to future retreats. At the very least, those attending the opening will have a unique experience that will positively affect their entire lives.
As for the retreatants, to meet with Rinpoche and have his blessing will be so memorable. He will also meet with them the day before the opening. It may sound like hyperbole, but many of us have witnessed this kind of direct connection and transmission. In so many ways we cannot now count, Rinpoche’s attendance will benefit the opening of the retreat, the community of KCC, and the future of both SCOL, the urban center, and indeed all beings.

His Eminence Khöndung Avikrita Vajra Rinpoche Returns to Seattle Date! July 22, 2018
As part of his short visit to America this July, our Head Lama H.E. Khöndung Avikrita Vajra Rinpoche will visit Sakya Monastery in Seattle to bestow a precious day of empowerments and teachings called Dharma for Life and Death.
The first empowerment will be the Chagdongma Long Life Empowerment, a rare practice for enhancing our life in Dharma. The second is the Shitro Empowerment, to support Sakya Monastery's regular Shitro practice dedicated to those who have passed away.

Summer Retreat 2018 The 21 Nails from the Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyu
July 24-29 2018 We at Gyalshen Institute cordially invite you to our summer 2018 residential silent retreat. There Chaphur Rinpoche will give teachings and instructions on “The 21 Nails” from the Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyu.
Teaching Topic
The 21 Nails is one of the innermost secret teachings from the Bön Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyu, the 21 essential points of Dzogchen practice, directly cutting through doubts about one’s natural state by tracing the nature of mind back to its source.
The teachings of the Twenty-One Nails are a direct expression of enlightenment—our natural mind. Each nail describes this natural state from a different point of view. The views are called “nails” or “seals” because they stabilize the experiential understanding of the natural state. These teachings are said to have come directly from the primordial buddha, Küntu Zangpo, passed by mind-to-mind transmission to eight successive buddhas, and then transmitted orally to 24 human Bön lineage holders, all of whom were yogis and siddhas. It was first written down by Yangton Sherap Gyaltsen in the 11th century. These teachings have been transmitted in an unbroken succession down to our teachers of the present day.
Silent Retreat
2017 was Gyalshen Institute’s first residential summer retreat, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
When asked about next year (2018) Rinpoche immediately chose the 21 Nails as his teaching topic, and was very enthusiastic about conducting this retreat in silence.
Silence is especially important when one is trying to catch the nature of mind.
“When the outer sounds are silenced, it is much easier to hear the unceasing sound of the mind’s nature.”
Rinpoche will also give the transmission for the entire Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyu. The Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyu contains the 21 nails and is considered one of the most important and the most comprehensive manual for Dzogchen practice in the Bön tradition.
This retreat will be conducted according to Bön tradition. We will give the 4 offerings daily (Sang Chöd, Chotor / water offering, burnt food offering and Chöd). We will also practice tsa lung / trul khor in the mornings and tögel in the early evening.

This summer, dharma blessings will shower down like rain! Summer Teachings will include pith instruction on the incomparable Ganges Mahamudra, followed by commentary, teaching, empowerment and practice retreat of the profound Chakrasamvara deity practice.
June 30 – July 1: H.E. Garchen Rinpoche will offer pith instruction on the Ganges Mahamudra – Tilopa’s radiant instruction to Naropa on how to rest in the pure and luminous state of our natural mind.
July 2 – July 4: H.E. Garchen Rinpoche and Ven. Drupon Rinchen Dorje will offer profound commentary and teaching on the Chakrasamvara practice, culminating with Chakrasamvara empowerment in the afternoon session of July 4.
July 5 – July 8: Garchen Rinpoche and Ven. Drupon Rinchen Dorje will lead a Chakrasamvara Retreat.
Chakrasamvara is highest yoga tantra practice in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition. In the Drigung Kagyu lineage, the most popular and common Chakrasamvara deity practice is in the form of the Five-deity Chakrasamvara. The Five-deity Chakrasamvara includes the central deity of the two-armed, single-faced male Chakrasamvara deity in union with the female Vajravarahi deity (these two in union are taken as a single deity) and four surrounding dakinis in the four directions.
Ven. Drupon Rinchen Dorje has said that “…the particular unsurpassed union tantra of Chakrasamavara, the king of tantras [is] equal to space. The teacher Vajradhara rose up in the form of the fierce compassionate emanation Chakrasamvara and taught this tantra. The power of the blessings of this tantra is said to be more exalted than others. Most of the mahasiddhas of India were renowned to have attained the supreme and common accomplishments through the gateway of Chakrasamvara. In Tibet Lord Marpa taught:
The tantra of Hevajra is renowned as profound. Chakrasamvara is known as the quintessence. ….
Thus, this deity has been the practice of the oceans of Kagyü siddhas. It is the secret path that has been relied upon by the hundred of siddhas of India and Tibet. It is the swift path for those with faith, diligence, and wisdom. It is the heart nectar of the Buddha’s teachings.”
Chakrasamvara requires empowerment prior to participation in the practice.
Finally, as a special treat for these Summer Teachings, we will offer Daily Yoga Practice with Joyanna Maria Ananda. As a student, practitioner and guide of Qigong and Yoga for most of her adult life, she has been blessed to have studied with Master Teachers in China, Tibet and India. Inspired in the natural blend of these eastern sciences, her classes are unique and spontaneous, joyfully creative and alive. We are so fortunate to have Joyanna lead daily classes, an excellent way to prepare our bodies and channels for the deepening practices offered during our Summer Teachings at the Garchen Buddhist Institute.
CHAKRASAMVARA MONTH LONG RETREAT Led by the Venerable Drupon Rinchen Dorje July 9 – August 5
Immediately following our Summer Teachings, where instruction, empowerment and practice retreat of the Five-deity Chakrasamvara will be given, we offer an opportunity to go deep into this profound deity yoga practice under the guidance of Venerable Drupon Rinchen Dorje. Six participants will live in the retreat village and practice three sessions a day in their own hut, and one group session in the village temple. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to properly do a deity retreat, and all the rituals involved. This retreat is a prerequisite for the three year retreat program.
Yidam practice is a very special tantric practice in which one transforms one’s normal, samsaric experience of reality into an extraordinary experience of the true state of all phenomena. While the teachings of the sutra-level consider ignorance as the root cause of samsaric existence, the tantric teachings identify the ordinary appearances as the root cause of samsara. The practice of Yidam is a special and profound method to quickly transform ordinary appearances into enlightened appearances. To be more accurate, this practice uncovers the actual state of appearances and reveal them to be pure and empty unceasingly. Yidam practice does not make ordinary appearances into something they are not — pure and empty of inherent existence. Rather, it uncovers the purity and emptiness that have always been there but obscured and unseen.
Due to the special nature of these teachings, it is best that one receive the details of these teachings directly from an authentic teacher of the lineage. Thus, this opportunity to practice in a small group, under the guidance of Venerable Drupon Rinchen Dorje, is rare and precious indeed.
The retreat village is drenched in blessings. At its center is the village temple, as well as a common kitchen building, shower/toilet, and laundry.

EMPOWERMENT OF WHITE SARASWATI this coming Sunday afternoon at Ewam Choden It was previously announced that this empowerment would be of Red Saraswati. However that one will not be offered now. It will be White Saraswati. Venerable Lama Kunga Rinpoche will kindly bestow the empowerment and practice teachings of White Saraswati (Yang Chenmo and Pi wang kar mo). The power of White Sarasvati brings intelligence and wisdom, with a focus on creative arts of all kinds. She protects the Buddhadharma and the practitioner.
There is no prerequisite. Everyone is welcome. A practice sadhana will be provided. The empowerment may be received as a blessing. The date is Sunday, May 27, 2018. The time is 1:00 p.m. Please arrive earlier to register at the door. The requested donation is $30.00. Dana (offerings) to the Lama is separate.
